NICM Research Committee

The NICM Research Committee provides advice to the NICM Advisory Board in the advancement of the NICM scientific program of strategically directed research into building the evidence base for complementary medicine and translation of this new knowledge into clinical practice. The Research Committee is comprised of key senior scientists with substantial experience in leading national research organisations or programs, preferably in medicine and healthcare with some experience in complementary medicine. This group provides strategic advice on research priorities and programs, assists in building strong collaborative links, and reviews progress against research strategies and activities.

Basil Roufogalis

Basil Roufogalis is an Emeritus Professor of the Discipline of Pharmacology at the Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney. His research interests include; new therapeutic agents from medicinal herbs in diabetes, and hyperlipidaemia, but also in pain and cancer; traditional medicines for protection of diabetic complications and metabolic syndrome; mechanisms of herbal medicines and multi drug resistance in cancer.


Andrew Scholey

Professor Andrew Scholey is Director of the Centre for Human Psychopharmacology and Professor of Behavioural and Brain Sciences.


David Briggs

Professor David Briggs was appointed an Adjunct Professor at NICM in 2006. He is a member of the NICM Research Committee, the International Advisory Board on Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica Standards, and the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional Medicine. He is also a WHO Temporary Adviser for the development of monographs for herbal medicines.


David Colquhoun

Associate Professor David Colquhoun is a Cardiologist in Private Practice in Brisbane. He has been extensively involved in research for the last 25 years, and has a private research group - Core Research.


Geoff Delaney

Professor Delaney is the director of cancer services for the South Western Sydney Local Health District and director of the Liverpool Cancer Centre. He is an experienced radiation oncologist with expertise in breast cancer, radiation oncology, service planning and health services research.


Jennifer Hunter

Dr Jennifer Hunter became an Adjunct Associate Professor at NICM in 2018. She has been an active health services researcher with NICM since 2014, and is a primary-care integrative medical practitioner with over 25 years of clinical experience. Associate Professor Hunter is highly regarded in Australia and internationally, providing advice on integrative medicine guidelines and research, and expert consultation to the World Health Organization..


John Funder 

Professor John Funder is a Senior Fellow at Prince Henry's Institute. He joined Prince Henry's Medical Research Centre in 1973 where he went from Senior Research Fellow to Senior Principal Research and Deputy Director.


Kenny Lawson

Associate Professor Lawson is a Principal Health Economist with the Translational Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University. Prior to academia, he worked internationally as an applied economist in the public and private sectors.


Marie Pirotta

Associate Professor Pirotta is a General Practitioner and an NHMRC Research Fellow at the Department of General Practice within the University of Melbourne. Her research interests include evidence-based complementary therapies for common problems encountered by general practitioners and women's health.


MaryAnn Bin-Sallik

Emeritus Professor Bin-Sallik AO is a ministerial appointee to the Western Sydney University Board of Trustees. She was awarded an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for her distinguished services to tertiary education as an academic, author and administrator, particularly in the area of Indigenous studies and culture, and as a role model and mentor.


Paul Komesaroff

Professor Paul Komesaroff is a practising physician and Professor of Medicine at Monash University and Executive Director of the international NGO Global Reconciliation.


Philippa Middleton

Ms Middleton is a Perinatal Epidemiologist and the Executive Director of the Australian Research for Health of Women and Babies, within the Robinson Research Institute. She is an acclaimed researcher in the field of pregnancy and women's health.


Ric Day

Professor Day is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of NSW, Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology. His fields of research include: clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, rheumatology and arthritis, psychiatry, endocrinology and decision support and group support systems.


Stephen Hannan

Mr Hannan is the Executive Director of Research Engagement, Development and Innovation at Western Sydney University. He brings extensive experience in research strategy, policy and performance to NICM's Research Committee.


Stephen Myers

Professor Stephen Myers is a complementary medicine expert and commentator, a research consultant to the Blackmores Institute, adjunct and spokesperson for NICM and recently the Director of the NatMed-Research Unit within Southern Cross Plant Science at Southern Cross University.


Vicki Kotsirilos

Associate Professor Vicki Kotsirilos AM is a respected general practitioner with over 30 years of clinical experience. She holds adjunct associate professorial positions with NICM and La Trobe University's Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, Faculty of Health Sciences, and formerly with Monash University. Dr Kotsirilos was appointed in 2014 as a member of the NICM Research Committee.
