NICM HRI Seminar 2021: Modern management of endometriosis

Event Name NICM HRI Seminar 2021: Modern management of endometriosis
Start Date 7 Oct 2021 12:00 pm

NICM Health Research Institute presents, Dr Jason Abbott, Professor of Gynaecological Surgery UNSW Sydney; Director, GRACE Unit at the Royal Hospital for Women; and Medical Director of Endometriosis Australia.

Join guest seminar speaker Professor Jason Abbott, (opens in a new window) as he discusses endometriosis research, medical and surgical management of endometriosis, healthcare policy and barriers to care, and the importance of multidisciplinary care.

Professor Abbott has helped shape Australia’s National Action Plan for Endometriosis launched July 2018 – the first for any disease in Australia. He is a Principle Investigator and Chair for the Australian Government funded National Endometriosis and Clinical Trials (NECST) network in endometriosis in Australia, is a member of The Federal Governments Endometriosis Advisory Group, and Chairs the RANZCOG Expert Advisory Group on Endometriosis. Professor Abbott is also Associate Editor of the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynaecology and ANZJOG and has more than 150 publications including text-books, book chapters and large-scale RCTs in gynaecological surgery.

Endometriosis management has followed a traditional medical model for many years, with hormone-based medications and surgery the mainstays of treatment. The Clinical Guidelines on the diagnosis and management of endometriosis were a key deliverable of the 2018 National Action Plan on Endometriosis and 75 recommendations were made with a determination of overall low-quality evidence. This primarily included traditional approaches, with notation of absence of specific sub-groups of the Australian population represented in the available evidence and treatment options including diet, CAM therapies and physiotherapy for symptom management poorly represented. There are a range of national programs that aim to improve the available evidence and deliver higher quality care for women with endometriosis which Professor Abbott will present.
