An industry partner program between NICM, Western Sydney University and Beijing Tong Ren Tang Chinese Medicine Corporation Ltd. is now underway to investigate safeties of possible new Chinese medicine ingredients and evidence to support use in Australia and promote the further research and development of therapeutic products.

NICM is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jerome Sarris as its new Deputy Director. Professor Sarris brings extensive research and management experience to the position with a career that spans two decades and includes senior roles at the University of Melbourne’s Department of Psychiatry, Swinburne University of Technology’s Centre for Human Psychopharmacology, and with the International Network of Integrative Mental Health in the US.

Chaired by Emeritus Professor Lloyd Sansom AO, the independent expert review identifies ways to improve access to therapeutic goods for consumers and remove unnecessary red-tape for industry whilst maintaining the safety of therapeutic goods in Australia.

Over 80 key guests from government, academia, and the complementary medicines industry celebrated the signing of an agreement between NICM and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) to advance collaboration on Chinese medicine research, education and clinical services. NICM Director, Professor Alan Bensoussan, says the establishment of a joint Chinese Medicine Research, Education and Clinical Centre is a significant milestone in the collaboration between BUCM and NICM.

NICM congratulates the re-elected Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and welcomes the re-appointment of the Hon Sussan Ley MP as Minister for Health and Aged Care, and the new appointment of the Hon Greg Hunt MP as the Minister for Industry, Innovation, and Science.

The Australian Medical Research Advisory Board held its first meeting at Parliament House on 4 May 2016. The Advisory Board commenced consultation on the development of the Australian Medical Research and Innovation Strategy and related Priorities from 6 May to 6 June 2016, calling for submissions through the Department of Health's consultation hub.
